The open-source PlayStation 5 emulator KyTyPS5 has successfully run the console version of Grand Theft Auto 5 on a PC, achieving playable frame rates in a major step forward for PS5 emulation . The emulator now renders the game’s opening North Yankton prologue mission at speeds between 40 and 60 frames per second .
The demonstration, shared on X by user BrutalSam, showed the game running with relatively stable performance despite significant graphical compromises including flickering assets and unstable lighting . The test system used an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D processor and a Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card .
Rapid Progress From Menus to Gameplay
The advancement represents a rapid acceleration in PS5 emulation development. In July 2026, the same emulator could only boot GTA 5 to its main menu and settings screen, with the campaign entirely inaccessible . Less than two months later, developers achieved 3D gameplay at up to 60 FPS .
However, the current build remains highly unstable. The game reliably crashes before the first major police shootout in the prologue, and the team has described the project as being in a very early stage . Some modders bypassed the opening mission to test the open world, where performance dropped below 15 FPS before recovering to the mid-40s during cutscenes, followed by another crash .
Implications for GTA 6 Emulation
The progress has fueled speculation that PC players might be able to play Grand Theft Auto 6 through emulation before its official PC release . Rockstar Games has not announced a PC release date for GTA 6, which launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026 . The PC version is widely expected to arrive approximately a year later, in late 2027 or early 2028 .
Industry observers note that GTA 6 is a far more demanding title than GTA 5, and running one game does not guarantee the other will work . The development team has indicated that the new game would be considerably more complex to emulate . Additionally, the lack of a physical disc version for GTA 6 presents a new challenge, as digital downloads may be harder to authenticate for emulators .
The renewed interest in PS5 emulation has been partly attributed to Sony’s announcement that it will cease physical disc production by 2028, as well as the absence of a PC announcement for GTA 6 . Other projects, including SharpEmu and RPCSX, have also reported progress in recent weeks, though the KyTyPS5 team has made the most visible strides with GTA 5 .
