A five-storey building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan collapsed on September 6, 2026, killing seven people and injuring six others. An AI reconstruction of the event has illustrated how a pillar in the basement became unstable during repair work, triggering the collapse of the nearly 50-foot-tall structure .
The building, located near Delhi University’s South Campus, housed approximately 75 students in paying guest accommodations at the time of the incident. The structure was around 50 years old and occupied a plot measuring about 55 square yards .
Chain of Events and Structural Weaknesses
Investigations indicate that the collapse originated in the basement, where repair work was ongoing. A pillar in the basement became critically weakened during the renovation. As its load-bearing capacity diminished, it could no longer support the weight of the building above, causing the upper floors to become unstable and eventually collapse .
Preliminary findings suggest the building had begun tilting several months before the collapse, and residents had raised concerns about its deteriorating condition . The structure, originally a residential complex, had been converted into a commercial PG accommodation roughly 20 years ago to cater to students from nearby colleges . The building reportedly had no pillars, a common characteristic of older constructions in the Satya Niketan area where additional floors were later added to original structures .
Role of Renovation and Water Accumulation
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, after inspecting the site, stated that accumulated water in the basement combined with repair work on the ageing structure was a major contributing factor. ‘Approximately 80% of the debris has been cleared; only the rubble from the basement remains,’ Gupta said on Monday .
Former Delhi Fire Services director Atul Garg noted that two major factors typically trigger the collapse of old buildings: heavy rain and construction activity. Both factors were present in this case, with the area having experienced heavy rain the previous night . Investigators indicated that despite water accumulation in the basement, labourers continued working, which may have compromised the structure’s stability .
Legal Action and Official Response
The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry and registered an FIR against the building owner, Hariram Bansal, also known as Gupta, and his brother. The FIR alleges that the owners added four floors to the old building to increase rental income .
Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa confirmed that the basement work may have triggered the collapse. Investigators are examining the condition of the pillar, the basement, and the repair work to determine the exact cause .
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has ordered the immediate sealing of illegal structures exceeding four floors and has mandated inspections of nearby PG accommodations and other buildings . An adjacent 40-50-year-old building has also been evacuated and is set to be demolished due to safety concerns .
Rescue operations continued through the night with multiple agencies, including the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, and the National Disaster Response Force, involved in the search and debris clearance .
