Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has become a monumental success at the global box office, surpassing $1.55 billion in worldwide earnings to become the 14th highest-grossing film of all time. The film’s record-breaking run has seen it topple numerous milestones, cementing its place as a major cultural and commercial event.
In its first week of release, the epic adaptation of Homer’s poem had already amassed an estimated $346 million globally, marking Nolan’s biggest box office opening ever and surpassing the first-week collections of his previous blockbuster, ‘Oppenheimer’. It quickly recovered its reported $250 million production budget within just three days of its theatrical debut.
By its fourth weekend, the film crossed the $1 billion threshold, becoming Nolan’s highest-grossing movie ever and surpassing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ ($1.085 billion). The film has now generated more than six times its production budget in ticket sales.
The film’s success extended to the Indian box office, where it has enjoyed a phenomenal run. Within its first week, ‘The Odyssey’ earned an estimated Rs 90.30 crore net. By its 31st day, the India net collection had reached Rs 179.63 crore, with a gross collection of Rs 213.40 crore.
‘The Odyssey’ opened to a massive $123.5 million in North America and a global launch of $263.7 million, marking Nolan’s highest-grossing worldwide opening ever. The film also set a new IMAX record, generating $289.3 million from IMAX screenings globally, surpassing ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’.
With a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson, the film has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, topping ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ ($1.338 billion) to claim the record.
As of its seventh weekend in cinemas, the film’s worldwide total of approximately $1.55 billion includes roughly $563.8 million from North America and close to $988.8 million from international markets. The film’s final worldwide total remains unsettled as it continues its theatrical run internationally.
