Robert Pattinson’s ‘Primetime,’ a dark thriller inspired by the controversial NBC series ‘To Catch a Predator,’ premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 5, 2026 . The film, which marks Pattinson’s first feature producer credit, explores the blurred lines between journalism and entertainment through the story of television host Chris Hansen .
Directed by Lance Oppenheim in his narrative feature debut, ‘Primetime’ is based on Luke Dittrich’s 2007 Esquire article ‘Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die’ . The film is not a direct biopic but uses Hansen and the show as a foundation for a broader examination of media sensationalism and its consequences .
Pattinson’s Performance and Preparation
Pattinson portrays Hansen as a complex figure, described as a cross between Jerry Maguire and Dracula . The actor said he found mastering Hansen’s distinctive voice and mannerisms unusually difficult .
‘This more than any other part that I’ve done, just grunt work,’ Pattinson said at the Venice press conference . He added, ‘I found the accent really difficult’ .
Pattinson said he did not approach the role as an attempt to reproduce Hansen’s life story . ‘There’s something magnetic about his presence,’ Pattinson said. ‘Something he’s doing is the reason why people are still talking about that show 20 years later’ .
Chris Hansen’s Response
Hansen, who was not consulted during production, has been critical of the film . He called Pattinson’s portrayal ‘overly dramatic’ while acknowledging the actor’s imitation is ‘a pretty good imitation’ . Hansen declined to watch an early screening after objecting to terms of a standard non-disclosure agreement .
Despite his reservations, Hansen has purchased advertisements for his true-crime streaming service TruBlu to run before screenings of ‘Primetime’ during its theatrical release .
Pattinson responded to Hansen’s criticism at the Venice press conference. ‘Obviously I hope he likes the movie,’ he said . ‘There’s something electrifying about him. I would hope the amount of inspiration his character has given a lot of people for years is some kind of compliment’ .
Supporting Cast and Production
The film also marks the acting debut of Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers . Bridgers described the experience as ‘super intimidating’ .
‘When Lance asked me, I was like, ‘No way, dude,” Bridgers recalled . She added, ‘working with incredible people actually makes it way easier’ .
The cast includes Merritt Wever as Hansen’s producer, Skyler Gisondo as a young actor recruited as a decoy, and Anna Faris as Hansen’s wife . The film is produced by Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen, with Pattinson’s company Icki Eneo Arlo also involved .
Critical Reception
Early reviews from Venice have been largely positive, with particular praise for Pattinson’s performance. Deadline called the film ‘an intense and sometimes dizzyingly meta journey’ . The BBC gave it a five-star review, describing Pattinson’s performance as ‘extraordinary’ and ‘completely immersed in the character’s strangeness’ .
‘Primetime’ is scheduled for release in US cinemas on September 25, 2026, followed by a UK and Ireland release on October 30 .
