About the Film
Dharm was released theatrically on June 8, 2007. The film was directed by Bhavna Talwar in her directorial debut and written by Vibha Singh and Varun Gautam. It stars Pankaj Kapur as Pandit Chaturvedi and Supriya Pathak as his wife Parvati.
The story is set in Varanasi and follows a revered Brahmin priest who adopts an abandoned infant. Years later, he discovers the child is Muslim, leading him to question his rigid beliefs. The film addresses themes of communal harmony and the true meaning of dharma.
The cast also includes Hrishitaa Bhatt, Pankaj Tripathi, Daya Shankar Pandey, and K.K. Raina. The film runs 105 minutes in its original form.
Awards and Recognition
Dharm won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration at the 2007 National Film Awards. The film premiered in the Tous Les Cinemas du Monde section of the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
It was also screened at the 38th International Film Festival of India in Goa, the Cancun Film Festival in Mexico, the Asian Festival of First Films in Singapore, and the Palm Springs Festival in California. The film won the Swarovski Trophy for Best Film at the Asian Festival of First Films.
Dharm was a finalist for India’s official entry to the Academy Awards but lost the selection to Eklavya: The Royal Guard. The film’s world rights were later acquired by Films Distribution, France.
