Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) may finally get relief from the intense summer heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and rainfall across parts of the region. The alert comes after several days of scorching temperatures exceeding 43°C, raising hopes that changing weather conditions could provide a much-needed break from the prolonged heatwave.
According to the IMD, a developing weather system moving from Uttar Pradesh toward Delhi-NCR is expected to trigger light to moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds in several areas, including Noida, Ghaziabad, and parts of north and east Delhi. Weather officials believe the first round of showers could arrive quickly, although these initial spells are expected to remain brief.
Rain Likely Across Delhi-NCR
Meteorologists have indicated that clusters of clouds approaching the region may produce sudden rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in isolated locations. The weather activity is being driven by heat-induced thunderstorms that commonly form during the pre-monsoon season. These systems often begin with strong dusty winds before bringing rain and cooler temperatures.
While skies are expected to remain partly cloudy throughout the day, conditions could become increasingly unstable as temperatures interact with moisture moving into the region. As a result, additional thunderstorms may develop later in the day.
More Intense Weather Expected by Evening
The IMD has forecast a second and potentially stronger round of thunderstorms during the late evening and nighttime hours. These weather systems are expected to impact Delhi-NCR along with neighboring regions including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh.
Some areas may experience moderate rainfall, lightning activity, and wind speeds ranging between 40 and 60 kmph. Such conditions could lead to temporary disruptions but are also likely to provide significant relief from the ongoing heat.
Why Is Delhi’s Weather Changing?
The sudden shift in weather is largely linked to a fresh western disturbance affecting northwest India. Western disturbances are weather systems that originate outside the Indian subcontinent and often bring moisture, cloud cover, rainfall, and thunderstorms to northern India.
After weeks of exceptionally high temperatures and heatwave-like conditions, this new system is introducing instability into the atmosphere. The combination of moisture and extreme daytime heating has created favorable conditions for thunderstorm development across the region.
Weather experts note that similar dust storms and scattered rainfall events have occurred in recent weeks, reflecting a typical pre-monsoon pattern observed before the arrival of the southwest monsoon.
Temperatures Expected to Fall
With cloud cover increasing and rain activity likely over the coming days, temperatures are expected to gradually decline. The IMD believes the current weather system could help bring daytime temperatures closer to normal levels and provide residents relief from unusually warm nights.
The cooling trend may continue over the next few days if thunderstorm activity remains active across northern India.
Relief After Days of Extreme Heat
For many Delhi residents, the orange alert signals a welcome change after enduring one of the hottest periods of the season. Although rainfall may be intermittent and localized in some places, the combination of showers, cloud cover, and strong winds is expected to ease the intense heat that has gripped the capital region.
As weather conditions continue evolving, authorities have advised residents to remain alert for lightning, strong winds, and sudden weather changes, especially during evening and nighttime hours. With a fresh weather system now influencing northern India, Delhi-NCR appears set for a cooler and more active weather pattern in the days ahead.
